ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said he would be disappointed if current councillors, who did not return after the local government elections but who had managed to get higher education qualifications in the past five years, were not absorbed by municipalities as officials.

Mabuyane was speaking in Cofimvaba during the official introduction of Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) mayoral candidate Kholiswa Vimbayo to about 3000 branch delegates on Friday.

He said those who make it to councils should also remember the people who campaigned for them when there were projects.

“It is difficult to have people volunteer for the ANC every election, but their lives do not change.”

He said councillors had to be humble but still had to tell people when they were wrong.

Those who remained in the ANC and were not deployed in governance had to work hard to remind the people why they had voted the ANC into power.

“There are people who are community development workers (CDWs) who are not members of the ANC. They talk bad about the ANC and they do not even like the ANC. They are CDWs in our power and we can not have that.”

He said ANC volunteers had to be the first when general workers were being employed.

Vimbayo said: “In the name of all the ANC candidates in the region, I welcome the responsibility.

“For us not to be in danger, we must be honest with the people – tell them what we can do and what we can not achieve.”
