Uncedo, soccer to fight crime

GOALS GALORE: The teams playing in the two streams of the SAB soccer league in Chris Hani showed enthusiasm at the opening of the league

UNCEDO Taxi Association’s Komani branch has responded to a request from the Mlungisi police and community policing forum (CPF) to make a donation towards a quarterly soccer tournament aimed at discouraging children between the ages of nine and 11, from crime and drugs prevalent in the area.

Speaking at the Uncedo office during the hand over, operational support officer Sergeant Mzwakhe Dyantyi said the tournament was initially the brainchild of the Queenstown Primary Schools Soccer Association.
The police became involved to grow it into an anti-crime initiative.
Dyantyi said the police decided to seek sponsors to get prizes for the tourney.
“The druglords and criminals have realised we catch up with them and arrest them. They have now turned to using small children to push the drugs for them. Through this tournament we are able to address the children on the issue.”
Dyantyi said the children were sharing the info on drug awareness at schools and the teachers had since been giving police tip-offs which have led to the discovery of drugs and weapons in schools.
Visible policing head Colonel Xolani Sali said police were also parents who were unhappy with seeing children being exposed to drugs.
He said Uncedo had assisted greatly in realising the tourney.
Uncedo Komani branch chairman Ayanda Peyi said the taxi industry had a bad history with police but this could show a different side of the public transport industry.
“This tournament also helps children. We are working and we don’t know what our children are doing,” he said.
Peyi said the business fraternity had to step in and take care of communities which faced challenges.
