KOMANI maths tutor Mavo Solomon has been nominated for the South African Heroes Awards, which is hosted by e.tv and eNCA.
Solomon recently featured in an interview with Algoa FM presenter Jeff Moloi.
The Rep carried the report “Mavo on maths mission” (April 3, 2016) on his work in the community.
Then e.tv picked up on the story and did a short segment on Solomon’s assistance to pupils who did maths at schools in the Aloevale, Victoria Park and New Bright areas for the past two years.
Moloi said he had been moved by how Solomon was giving back to the community.
Solomon, who had left his job in Gauteng and relocated to Komani in 2014, starting his maths outreach to local children, said the poor pass rate in the Eastern Cape had inspired him to move to the province.
He has since then assisted at Nkwanca, Ndlovukazi and WB Rubusana High Schools.
He said it was often the style of teaching mathematics that put pupils off and that new, innovative ways could assist in improving the pass rate. “A lot of people focus on getting high marks – my approach is about understanding.
“If learners are able to explain what they learn I am happy, their performance will follow suit.”
Other enemies, he said, included language barriers, reckless school management, negligent parents and learners who did not commit themselves to their school work.
