Premier honours late Hani in memorial speech

PAST generations had dedicated their lives towards fighting for a better South Africa, speakers at the Chris Hani and O.R Tambo Memorial Lecture in Cofimvaba said yesterday.

Addressing the packed Cofimvaba High School hall, Premier Phumulo Masualle urged participants to uphold the legacy of the past generations. “ Let us reposition ourselves  and be geared to fight for the betterment of our people. We must find our mission and complete it without betraying our mandate in their name.

The Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) set out its plans to celebrate the month of April as the Heroes Month.

CHDM Executive Mayor Koliswa Vimbayo hailed the stalwarts of the liberation movement as selfless and patriots. “As 2017 is known as the year of OR Tambo, it also marks the 24th anniversary since the brutal assassination of Chris Hani.”

She added, “In paying tribute to this giant we must ensure that we truly define his legacy in action. As leaders we have a responsibility to advance his ideals and to serve our community in a responsible manner and without fear or favour.”  An educational video on the life and times of Chris Hani was screened, followed by pictures of service delivery initiatives by government  within the district.
