Warning as EC dam levels continue to drop

THE Water and Sanitation Department has warned that certain dams in the Eastern Cape continue to experience low water levels due to a lack of rainfall as a result of the drought and very high temperatures.

In a statement today, the department appealed to Eastern Cape residents to appeal water sparingly, saying dam levels were being monitored on a continuous basis.

The average dam level in the province was at 72.3% last year, compared to 61.9% this year.

The Algoa Water Supply System which is inclusive of the dams of Churchill, Impofu, Kouga, Loerie and Groendal are at 40.6% compared to 79.6% at the same time last year. The Amathole Water Supply System which includes the following dams: Laing, Rooikrantz, Gubu, Bridle drift, Nahoon and Wriggleswade are at 70.9% compared to 88.5% at this time last year.
