A cow hit by a vehicle on the N2 in the Eastern Cape was butchered alive by a crowd of bystanders‚ the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said on Monday.
Petru Saal writes that the beast was still breathing when people arrived with axes and started chopping it up in Breibach‚ said Annette Muller‚ an inspector at the King William’s Town SPCA.
“I shouted at them to stop cutting the cow. I tried to push them away but they would not stop. I have never in my time with the SPCA heard a cow bellow like that from agony. All I wanted to do was end the animal’s suffering‚” said Muller.
Senior NSPCA inspector Jaco Pieterse said one of the cow’s hind legs had been removed by the time Muller arrived.
“The bystanders became aggressive and pushed the SPCA inspector away. Fortunately (she) managed to end the animal’s suffering in a humane manner‚ even though the bystanders continued to chop the animal with an axe for the meat.”
