Government censors the media

Three decades ago, the government of the Republic of South Africa introduced more press media restrictions on August 28, 1987.

According to http://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/rsa-introduces-more-press-restriction; “the state of emergency gave the former president, Pieter Willem Botha, powers to rule by decree and introduce any measures deemed necessary to curb resistance. The former Minister of Home Affairs and Communication, Stoffel Botha, introduced more press restrictions to censor the media from reporting about incidents relating to unrest and police activities.”

Botha labelled the alternative media, which were not censored by the government as ‘media terrorists’, as they publicised violence and proclaimed revolutionary messages against the State. He continued by saying freedom of expression would not be allowed to such an extent that it fostered chaos and revoution in the country.
