Police arrest 1 331 in festive season operations

With Festive Season Operations in full swing, Eastern Cape SAPS have increased targeted and informed deployment of resources and police visibility, which have yielded the arrest of 1 331 suspects in different clusters in the past seven days.

Police spokesman Captain Khaya Tonjeni said these operations were aimed at preventing and fighting crime and maximizing safety of the community and visitors in our province throughout the festive season and beyond.

 

The arrests include 457 suspects for contact crimes, 316 for crimes dependent on police action and 78 for property related crimes.

During the operations, drugs with an estimated street value of R200 000 were confiscated which included dagga, cocaine, crack cocaine, chrystal meth, heroine, mandrax and ecstasy. A total of 1 897 litres of liquor were seized from different unlicensed dealers and suspects who were drinking in public.

A total of 19 stolen vehicles were recovered and 17 illicit firearms (14 revolver, 2 homemade rifles, 1 shot gun) and 280 rounds of ammunition were recovered. The firearms have been sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they have not been used in the commission of crime.

All the suspects are expected to appear in court for the different crimes and charges they face throughout this week.

Eastern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga commended the members executing these operations. “We have intensified our operations to ensure the safety of our communities and visitors. We appeal to the public to continue to work closely with the police by reporting crime promptly and also to be patient with law enforcement at the road blocks as these operations are conducted to guarantee their safety”, said Lt Gen Ntshinga.
