THE Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has issued a message in celebration of Freedom Day tomorrow:

“2018 marks the 24th year since our historic elections that ushered our hard-earned democracy where many heroes and heroines sacrificed their lives for the Freedom we are enjoying today.

Freedom Day is celebrated annually on the 27 April and the month has been declared Freedom Month.

This year is the year of Tata Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu as they would be celebrating their Centenary and as a country we are celebrating their lives with the theme ‘The Year of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’ towards full realisation of our freedom through radical-economic transformation.

This day gave birth to our constitutional democracy and for most South Africans, it was the first time they could cast their vote in a national election. That brought dignity back to our people and the country transformed into a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society.

Our freedom remains incomplete without the economic emancipation of the majority of South Africans. As government we are determined to deliver the type of society our heroes and heroines fought for and forging ahead with land distribution.

Freedom Day will give us an ideal platform to reflect on the progress made thus far in transforming our society in many spheres such as Education, Health, Land and access to basic services.

Let us continue to strive for social cohesion and freedom for all and prosperity.

“Together we are taking Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality Forward.’
