EMLM negotiating a settlement with Eskom to prevent power interruptions

The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) is negotiating with Eskom for the settlement of its debt. Failure to do so could result in the towns under its jurisdiction facing power cuts from the 20th this month. EMLM mayor Sisisi Tolashe revealed during a council meeting today they had proposed to pay Eskom R45m but the entity requested that R85m be paid before November 30 to prevent electricity interruptions. The mayor could not say whether the money requested by Eskom would be paid or not. Responding to a question from DA councillor Chris de Wet about whether the municipality could assure residents whether power would not be cut off, Tolashe said she was not in control of Eskom’s decisions and that she did not want to make empty promises to the public regarding the matter Picture: ANDISA BONANI
