Louis Rex Primary and Nonesi Public Primary School were beneficiaries of the Siyasizana (turning bags into books) initiative after the two schools combined collected 20 000 empty Sasko bread bags combined.
Sasko admin manager Jennilee Stride said pupils were encouraged to collect empty Sasko bags and stand a chance of receiving donations in the form of books, tables or paintings for their school. “Each school received a total of 100 reading books for foundation phase pupils. We will be visiting schools in the rural areas as well, so we encourage schools to get on board, buy more Sasko and start collecting empty bags for their school.”
Nonesi Primary School acting principal Monwabisi Koti said the school was grateful for the support and felt honoured to be nominated. “We were alerted by the Sasko team that our school was nominated to benefit in this project. As people may know, we are one of the disadvantaged schools in our community. Life can be very difficult, but with this support I believe these reading books will assist in improving our pupils’ reading and writing skills. We appreciate this gesture and the school would like to thank the entire management team for this effort.”
Louis Rex principal, Bevin Christoffels, said gifts came after they had held a staff meeting as the school had a shortage of reading books. “This is a blessing and our children will greatly benefit. This will improve the standard of education in our school. We have 1 400 pupils and the number of plastic bags collected varies. We always encourage them to collect these bags from home and bring them to school,” he said.
