GHS matrics win netball match against Old Girls

Queenstown Girls’ High School Old Girls netball squad went from end to end of the netball court jostling for a win as they took on a group of matriculants over the birthday weekend.

The all girls’ school was abuzz with a host of activities as they celebrated 144 years of existence. Sports fixtures included hockey and netball against East London-based rivals Cambridge High School.

The netball squad of the class of 2009 were reminded to bend and flick during a friendly match with a group of grade 12 scholars who beat the former pupils by a clear 9-4 score.

First and second team netball coach, Nandi Zuma, said the game was for mere entertainment and players had a cheerful time on the netball court.

“It was very difficult for our Old Girls to catch up with some of our team who are still pupils playing regularly. You could, however, see that some of them were previous netball players and they understood the game and managed to score against the current players. Although it wasn’t a simple game for them, they tried really hard and it was entertainment for them. They enjoyed themselves and they wanted to remember their school in a good and positive way,” said Zuma.

Old Girl Alex Taylor from the class of 2009 currently lives in Cape Town and said it had been a while since her last visit to town. “It is quite special and I am happy to be back and to have some of the people we were at school with to share this memories with. It has been real fun.”

Lovelyn Nwadeyi shared the same sentiments: “It’s good to be back. We’ve been connecting with teachers, old friends, there have been a lot of memories, it has been really special. The school has changed for the better, in a lot of ways, and it is good to see progress,” Nwadeyi said.

The girls also celebrated their 10 year reunion by facilitating a career guidance session for grade 11 and 12 pupils.
