Tense end to finals

AFTER seven weeks of exhilarating action, the curtains came down on the inaugural Indoor Hockey League last
Saturday with two pulsating finals.

The first final saw the women competing. Scoregasms played Chicks with Sticks (CWS).

Scoregasms raced to a 3-0 lead with goals from Zeno Brown, Luvern Ambraal and Caryn Goodman. Kelly Jordaan
replied for CWS to reduce the deficit to two. Ambraal made it 4-1 before Jordaan replied with another goal
to make it 4-2. Man-of-the-match Ambraal scored twice in succession to make it 6-2 at half time. Scoregasms scored eight unanswered goals, with Ambraal notching up a second half hat-trick to take her tally in the final to seven goals.

Goodman scored a second half hattrick to take her tally to four. Shanice Andrews chipped in with two second half goals to complete the rout. The men’s final was a titanic battle between the unbeaten Popcorn Tigers and the Matrix.

Matrix ran to a 3-0 goal cushion through goals from Rodney Bosman, Zenith Hartnick and Dylan Davids. Ashwin O’ Rie pulled one back for Tigers to reduce the scoreline to two. Matrix boasted two goals by Hartnick and Bosman to take the score to 5-1.

Dean Goodman had the last say in an electrifying half with a goal – 5-2 at the break.
Chaviele Hartnick increased Matrix’s lead to 6-2. Popcorn Tigers’ Greshwin O’Rie scored followed by two goals by Goodman to complete his hat-trick. Rishaad Pijoos completed a remarkable comeback (6-6).

The game went into extra time. Pijoos thought he had won it for Tigers after putting them up 7-6, but Bosman
scored to level matters yet again. The match went to a penalty shoot-out.

Warren Ruiters was the hero for Popcorn Tigers as he saved a penalty with Tigers converting two penalties
and Matrix successful with one.

Top goal scorers in the women’s league were Levern Ambraal and Shanice Andrews with 11 goals each.
Dean Goodman took the honours for the men, also with 11.

Superteens took third place in the women’s section with Plutos doing the same among the men.
