SAD LOSS: United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa speaking during the memorial for three UDM councillors who died in a car accident recently

UNITED Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa was welcomed by hundreds of party supporters who had gathered for the memorial service of the three UDM candidate councillors who died in a car accident on June 9.Zolile Venfol, Monica Sdumo and Gladys Ntuze, all candidate councillors for Lukhanji, died while trying to garner support in their campaign for the upcoming August 3 local government elections. They were travelling from Emalahleni when a tyre burst, causing the Toyota Corolla they were travelling in to overturn near Ngonyama village.

A fourth person, who was admitted to the Frontier Hospital, was released on the same day.Holomisa, speaking during the service at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre last Wednesday, described the three as hard workers who had put the needs of their people ahead of their own.

“The UDM as well as the families are mourning. We hope that God will provide to the families as well as to the UDM so that we can fill their vacancies,” he said.“We have lost people who were at war, fighting for their constitutional rights.“They were campaigning for the betterment of the lives of people of South Africa. We have lost good members.“This region has lost warriors who were fighting for freedom.”

He said the party would try to replace the councillors. “We have approached the IEC and requested them to allow us to choose other candidates. But, as you are aware, the IEC is not controlled by us, it is controlled by one political party in this country and if they are willing to help us, we will thank them.”

Spokesman for the Sdumo family, Lita Sdumo said they were trying to move on after the tragic accident.“We are saddened by this. Monica Sdumo’s husband is a man who uses crutches to get around. She had the task of assisting him from the morning till sunset. He can not do much for himself, so we have lost a valuable member of our family. It is painful when we look at our brother because the rest of the family lives far away. We are concerned about who will help him.”The three were buried on Saturday at different locations.
