TWELVE female boxers participated in the 60th Women’s March anniversary at Thobi Kula Indoor Sport Complex recently, with Phumeza Bayibayi winning her bout against Avile Tyise in the third round.
Six boxers came from the Cala Xhalanga boxing club, four from Komani, one from Thambo Village and one from Whittlesea.
Chris Hani Amateur Boxing Organisation (Chabo) head Mabuti Mapeyi said Bayibayi did well in the first two rounds, but showed signs of losing strength in the third.
“This is her third bout. In order for her to be active we have to send her to East London or Grahamstown and we do not have the funding.”
Chabo planned to groom quality women boxers who would be able to compete at the same level as Bayibayi.
Mapeyi, who is also a boxing coach, said Bayibayi would be taken with two other promising boxers – Chumani Choloba and Lihlekazi Mntuyedwa from Cala – to East London on September 17.
“We are preparing for the provincial tournament to take place in March next year.”
Results of other bouts were: Lihlekazi Mntuyedwa from Cala beat Babalwa Tshemese from Whittlesea with Saskia Brown from Komani claiming victory against Yolanda Meyi from Cala. Unathi Ninzi from Cala beat Kamva Daku from Komani and Phelokazi Malungisa from Cala overcame Nosipho Popo from Komani.
