MZWABANTU Dapula of Komani writes: Spring has come and has marked the end of the rugby season. For the home clubs, it was not a good season in terms of performance.
Komani has a rich history of rugby and it has produced a lot of rugby giants – Tandi August and the late Selby Meleni, to name two.
During the olden days, rugby was played from lower primary to high school level. In those days, the Mlungisi stadium, Dumpy Adams, Sandringham and Madeira Sports Club were hives of tough rugby competitions and local talent was displayed.
Former rugby players and fans will agree that rugby in our area is in a state of decline and something needs to be done before the sport collapses. At a recent funeral, I met former rugby players and fans who shared the same sentiments.
We all agreed that an urgent meeting of all rugby-loving people needs to be convened on Saturday September 17 at 3pm at Nkwanca High School.
It is this meeting that will facilitate the crafting of a programme that will lead to a rugby indaba which will involve all stakeholders.
Let us join hands and save the ship.
