FORMER Lukhanji executive mayor Nozi Makanda, who resigned as a councillor candidate for the ANC in the newly established Enoch Mgijima Municipality, has been sworn in as a member of the mayoral committee at the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM).
CHDM communications manager Thobeka Mqamelo confirmed in a telephonic interview yesterday that Makanda was the finance portfolio head.
Makanda, who cut her teeth in politics as a unionist, joined local government in 2011 as a council speaker at CHDM. After a lot of political and administrative insta- bility at the then Lukhanji, she was deployed there as executive mayor. She is making a return to where she first experienced local government.
She has replaced Madoda Papiyana, who has since joined Enoch Mgijima to fill the post of finance head.
Council speaker Mzoxolo Peter confirmed Papiyana had been deployed to the finance portfolio. Peter said Papiyana would be confirmed in the next council meeting.
The Rep reported (“No finance chair yet”, September 9) that the vacancy in the finance portfolio had come under fire when United Front councillor Aaron Mhlontlo wanted to know why the post was vacant during a council meeting recently.
Mhlontlo said he could not understand why the position would be vacant while there were more than over 60 councillors, adding “maybe that position has been reserved for someone”.
DA councillor Malibongwe Xhelisilo said the appointment of members of the mayoral committee was the prerogative of the executive mayor, not a political party.
Enoch Mgijima executive mayor Lindiwe Gunuza Nkwentsha said she was not ready to appoint someone at the time. She said she was still looking at certain criteria.
