THE annual Thomas River Mountain Bike Challenge near Cathcart was once again a great success on Saturday.
The venue for the event is the historical Thomas River Village, set between the scenic mountains and rolling farmlands of Thomas River.
Sponsored by Express Petroleum, as well as many other generous donors, the event was designed to appeal to the whole family, ranging from a gruelling 65km bike ride to a scooter dash for the tiny tots.
The last two years have also seen the development of trail running, a growing sport in South Africa, with the challenge making available three options: 20km, 13km and 5km.
Every year, the cycle and running routes have been modified to provide new challenges, and these are greatly enjoyed by the participants.
Generous meat prizes were awarded to the winners of the cycle events.
The riders were professionally timed by Mountain Events and looked after by trained nurses and Alderson’s Ambulance paramedics.
The Cathcart Round Table also organised a challenging motorbike ride, which saw about 500 people enter the event. Food stalls and fun for the children created the ideal family day.
