JACOBA SUSPECT was shot dead barely minutes after a daring daylight robbery at a jewellery store on the Chris Hani Hexagon in the Komani central business district on Wednesday afternoon.
Response officers from local security company, Red Guard Security, cleared bystanders from the pavement outside the store once they became aware that a robbery was in progress.
The officers also assisted in apprehending one suspect and the recovery of the stolen jewellery, operations manager Willie Reynecke said.
Police spokeswoman captain Namhla Mdleleni said the police had received a call about an armed robbery in progress at the jewellery store and a shoot-out ensued.
“On their arrival, they met three suspects between 30 and 40 years who were on their way out of the shop. On seeing the police, the suspects started firing at them.”
Mdleleni said two suspects were shot. One died on the scene, while the other was injured and taken to hospital. One suspect managed to flee the scene and remains at large.
When The Rep arrived on the scene, several police vehicles were parked in front of the store and the area had been cordoned off.
Bags of jewellery were still scattered on the scene.
Mdleleni said the police recovered two unlicensed firearms, jewellery and cellphones.
Police were investigating charges relating to the robbery and shooting.
An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said people were running for cover at the time, while the sound of gun shots reverberated through the air.
She said a man, whom she believed had also been involved in the robbery, took off his jacket and ran off in another direction.
Komani acting cluster commander colonel Clifton Keys commended the police and Red Guard Security for the quick response during the robbery.
