KOMANI residents involved in the entertainment industry attended the fifth anniversary and award ceremony of Lukhanji FM at La Aura Sports Club on Saturday.
Station manager Andrew Joe said the station had shown satisfactory growth over the last few years.
“It has been a difficult task to do considering the lack of resources and relations with government but it has been fulfilling with the passion that we share for media and broadcasting. We have 58000 listeners. When I got here and became a partner the listenership was on 11000 so we have worked hard to ensure growth and sustainability.”
He said the station continued to help with development in Komani and surrounding areas.
“The radio is the mouthpiece and ears of our community with localised content and constant public participation. We are closing the gap on information sharing and educating our community on issues that affect them. We sponsor a lot of charity organisations, schools and churches. We have a variety of shows that mostly cater for everyone.”
In the past four years Lukhanji FM has produced six presenters who have joined bigger radio stations including the SABC.
“It is part of our mandate to put Komani on the map. We run the radio on a shoestring budget and that does not enable us to work at our full potential. We have support from different entities and advertising is our only source of revenue.”
Breakfast show host Alungile DJ Slenda Rejeni, who won the best male presenter award, said coming up with content for the show had been difficult but rewarding.
“My show allows me to do many things including to inform and motivate people. I am happy about this award and I have my fans to thank for it.”
