THE REAL Men Forum spread its wings to Sterkstroom during the launch of the project in Eluthuthu Village last week.
The body was started in 2013 with chairman Fikile Langkop saying the main objectives were to try and restore the dignity of men in communities.
“We started with the assistance of the Department of Social Development. Men are the culprits in most rapes so we do not want to blame the government departments for not doing anything. We should take responsibility as men.”
He said people in communities were losing confidence in men.
“Men are called names and this does not sit well with some of us. We are trying to help women against this evil. We go with women on their campaigns so that people can regain their faith in men, so that they see a man as someone who can help them, someone who can protect them.”
The forum also helps men who are abused. “We have a few men, who come forward when they are abused so we are also here to assist them. We do not want the work of the forum to be limited to Komani but to have committees in other areas as well because people need help.
“We want to work with the municipalities. There are many men in council, yet there are high crime rates in their areas.
“We are already working with the police and we also visit initiation schools during this traditional circumcision period.” He called on other NGOs to become involved and to champion the project in their areas.
