Counting cost of Newvale storm

The cost of repairs to six Newvale houses damaged during a storm on December 28 is still being considered.

Roofing was ripped off and windows broken during the storm which lasted for about 15 minutes.

Ward councillor Ongama Adonisi said he approached Enoch Mgijima executive mayor Lindiwe Gunuza- Nkwenthsa and councilors to visit the area.
Adonisi said, “They came immediately after the storm. I saw electric poles that had fallen into the streets along with electric wires hanging loose.”

Adonisi said in spite of government departments being closed for the December holidays they were able to respond and to offer assistance.

“The South African social security agency contributed food parcels to the families. The community service department allowed affected families to fill in forms in order to assist each household. A letter was written to Enoch Mgijima municipal manager Nolwandle Gqiba. All of these are still being processed.”

Some families had moved in with relatives as a temporary measure.
