SIX of the eight suspects, including flying squad police officers, a reservist and a civilian arrested in connection with allegedly taking bribes in relation to or in exchange for drugs, have been denied bail by the Komani Magistrate’s Court.

The Rep reported (“Seven charged with corruption,” February 3) that five members of the flying squad – warrant officers Monwabisi Dyongo, 49, Dalithemba Maheshane, 46, sergeant Andiswa Jikumlambo,40 and constables Sipho Nene, 39, Siyanda Gunuza 27, and reservist constable Mzimkhulu Ndevu, 39 – were arrested along with civilian Makgotso Kesa, 45.

Maheshane and Nene were granted bail on their first appearance on February 1.

In a follow up report (“Sixth Komani policeman in custody,” February 10) it was reported that an additional policeman, Amos Rafu, 52, was arrested while attending training in Pretoria.

This week police spokeswoman captain Namhla Mdleleni said the other six accused were denied bail in their separate appearances in court.

She said the case against Kesa, Ndevu, Gunuza and Rafu had been postponed to March 20 while Jikumlambo and Dyongo will appear on February 28.
