Customer care number lands taxi driver in hot water

THE Eastern Cape Department of Transport Customer Care number has landed one taxi driver with a R1 500 fine for texting while driving.

 

The Department indicated this week that a passenger heeded the call by the Department for the use of the emergency numbers to report accidents and reckless driving by drivers.

According to Chief Traffic Officer Mbaleni, on February 21 around 8pm, a passenger called in to report a taxi driver that was texting while driving on route to Cape Town.  “The driver was stopped outside Cradock towards Graaf Reinet and was fined R1 500 for such behaviour. All passengers agreed to be witnesses against the recklessness committed by the driver.”

He warned those who kept on breaking the rules of the road that they would face the might of the law and applauded the passengers for standing up against reckless driving and making use of emergency number to report such behaviour.  “I am appealing to all road users to make use of the emergency and Customer numbers of the Department to report these incidents.
