A TOTAL of 16 councillors at Enoch Mgijima Municipality owe the local authority a combined figure of more than R100000 in rates and services for over three months, meaning that they are in violation of the Systems Act Code of Conduct prohibiting councillors from owing for rates and services.
This was revealed by executive mayor Lindiwe Gunuza Nkwentsha on Tuesday while tabling her mayor’s quarterly budget monitoring report.
Gunuza Nkwentsha stated in her mid-term assessment report for 2016-17 that it was projected the municipality would not have sufficient cash available to fund the budget until June.
“The main reason for this is low revenue collection that has happened in the past six months,” she said.
