THE Enoch Mgijima sub-regional task team was formed by the ANC Youth League regional task team in Chris Hani District on Tuesday.
The task team will be led by Zithulele Sigonyela.
Convener Namhla Nkumenge said there had been no functional youth league structures since the merger of the three municipalities of Nkwanca, Lukhanji and Tsolwana last year.
“This resulted to a lull in that almost all branches of the ANCYL in the sub-region are due for branch congresses. The primary mandate for the task team is to establish youth league branches in the 34 wards of Enoch Mgijima and the five special branches in the sub region in the institutions of higher learning.”
She said they aimed at forging and resuscitating relations within the progressive youth alliance structures. “We firmly believe that they should form part of the overall youth agenda in striving for the attainment of economic freedom in our lifetime.”
The ANCYL was concerned with the struggles faced by young people in the region.
“Young people form part of the most vulnerable social strata in society, a case in point is the struggles of young people in institutions of higher learning, the unemployment of young people in general.
“We have just experienced unemployed young graduates taking part in a protest for jobs. We view the struggles of these young revolutionaries as part of the broader agenda for economic emancipation.”
The task team would also engage with the Enoch Mgijima Municipality to establish a youth unit that will directly deal with youth programs.
“These have not been finding proper expression in the current form like special programmes unit (SPU). We feel strongly that the Enoch Mgijima SPU section do not understand the primary objective of the establishment of special programs.”
