Soccer tournament set to draw avid fans

Date:

SIXTEEN teams from around the Chris Hani District municipal area will take part in the Gwede Mantashe Easter Weekend Soccer Tournament which will be held in conjunction with the Chris Hani District Municipality and the department of sport, recreation, arts and culture.

Safa Chris Hani regional executive officer Kholiwe Masabalala said the tourney would start on Saturday at 9am at the Dumpy Adams Stadium. The finals will be played on Monday.

“The Gwede Mantashe Foundation, in partnership with Safa, will select an under-21 team for development.”

She appealed to locals to support the tournament adding that no weapons, drugs or alcohol would be allowed at the grounds. “We must enjoy the games throughout the entire Easter weekend without fear of unruly behaviour and threats of violence.”

Speaking at a CHDM press briefing last Friday, special programmes political head Nonzukiso Matiwane said the foundation had been working with local municipalities in the district for some time on the sport development concept. Matiwane said there would be talent scouts at the tournament
