Illegal dumping site still a problem for Mlungisi residents

RESIDENTS OF Q-section in Mlungisi are still waiting for the municipality to clean up an illegal dumping site next to their houses.The Rep reported ( Dumping raises ire of residents, 17 March) that a pile of garbage which includes dog carcasses, human waste and building rubble had been accumulating in the area

Mongezi Kuta, speaking to The Rep during a follow-up this week, said the situation was getting worse.”The municipal workers came and looked at it. They left promising to come back to clean it up but that has never happened. We are still waiting for them.”

Municipal spokesman Fundile Feketshane said the community services directorate had developed a schedule of dealing with all illegal dumping sites.“Everyone must take responsibility and report such sites to the ward councillor and ward committees so that these are resolved.”

He said in the near future, communities would be empowered with the necessary information so that they could take ownership of their wards.“The Constitution provides for the bill of rights which states that everyone has a right to clean environment and it that is trampled upon, it means our communities are denied such rights.”
