Cope threatens to remove Molefe

Date:

THE Congress of the People (Cope) has called on the governing ANC to instruct Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown to rescind her decision and let power utility Eskom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brian Molefe go.

Party national spokesman Dennis Bloem said this was because the ANC was under pressure from society.
Molefe returned to Eskom this week after serving a stint as an ANC back bencher in the National Assembly. This followed his resignation from the utility after being fingered in a public protector report and Molefe had been quoted in the media saying he resigned “voluntarily in the interest of good cooperative governance”.

Subsequent media reports indicated that Molefe would receive a R30-million package after working for Eskom for only 18 months. This was turned down by Brown. In a statement today, Cope said Molefe’s reinstatement as CEO of Eskom was irregular and illegal. He voluntarily resigned from Eskom without being forced by anyone, therefore, he was no longer an employee of utility, Bloem said.

“Cope wants to reiterate that we are determined to continue with our protest action until Molefe permanently leaves Eskom. We will make an unannounced visit to Megawatt Park very soon to forcefully remove Molefe.” Bloem said Cope wanted show President Jacob Zuma and the Gupta family, which has been accused of capturing the state, the party would not allow anybody to turn SA into a Banana Republic. “Cope views the reinstatement of Molefe as corruption of the highest order because he does not deserve to be there.”
