The Siyazama Teenagers in Mlungisi are fast becoming an entertainment group to be reckoned with in the Nomzamo area. The group began their journey in February last year when they started performing at birthday celebrations and events happening in the township.
The group, consisting of girls and boys aged eight and older, is managed by resident Aviwe Njokweni. She said they were receiving overwhelming support from the parents of the children involved.
“These children used to gather whenever one of them was having a birthday and they would contribute small amounts of money towards the celebrations. The parents supported them through organising braais and baking cakes for them and today we have a solid group of passionate dancers and singers from our area.”
Siyazama, which means ‘We are trying’ aims to invite many teenagers from Nomzamo to become involved. “I am happy when I work with children. I am more concerned about their well-being and safety and I want to see them go far in life. ”
The group’s focus, she said, was on creating a feeling of love and living in peace within the community.
