THE plight of children – particularly children living in rural areas – will take centre stage in a summit involving the Chris Hani District Municipality and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform in Komani over the weekend.

In a press statement from the department this week, it was indicated that the summit was intended to convey the government’s vision to protect and ensure the wellbeing of children a part of Child Protection Week which is commemorated under the theme “ Working Together to protect children.”
Child Protection Week is commemorated annually to raise awareness on the Rights of Children as stated in the Children’s Act no 38 of 2005.
The summit is set to target children between the ages of eight and 14 with learners from various schools within the Chris Hani district set to participate.
A collaborative approach between government and all non-government organisations, (NGOs), whose mandate is the welfare of children, will attend including representatives of the education department, the National Youth Development Agency and the social development department.
The venue of the event was not known at the time of this post, but will be conveyed later on if the information is received.
