Communal property in the spotlight at Komani hearings

Date:

The Portfolio Committee on Rural Development and Land Reform will today move to Komani for the next leg of the nationwide public hearings on the Communal Property Associations Amendment Bill [B12-2017].

In a statement by the parliamentary communication services on behalf of the committee chairwoman Phumuzile Ngwenya-Mabila, it was indicated that the Bill was intended to remedy challenges identified in the implementation of the principal act. Some of the intentions were to provide for clarity on the objective of communal property associations; to extend the application of the act to certain labour tenants who acquired land; to provide for the establishment of a Communal Property Associations Office and the appointment of a Registrar of Communal Property Associations. The Committee will hold hearings in all provinces to enable extensive contributions from communities affected by the act.

The hearings take place at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre from 9.30am today.
