TWO young Newvale men are making sure that the education of children living in the area is not being neglected.
Athenkosi Tabo, 21, and Lamela Bambalaza, 19, have started the non-profit organisation Sango Gcaleka Legacy, which aims to boost the education of children aged six to 14.
“We play games that will help them with their mathematical skills and life skills, and include nutrition over the weekend,” Tabo said.
Tabo said the games were also helping the children to get fit and stay healthy.
On Monday, the young men partnered with a preschool in the township, Nasiphi’isizwe Playgroup, to assist primary school pupils with their homework.
“The support of the community has been exceptional. We are truly grateful to the parents for trusting us to have their children under our supervision. There are some community members who are, however, negative about what we are doing,” Tabo said.
A few businesses and families were contributing to the project which includes a soup kitchen.
He said the aim was to reduce crime in the area and to show the children that the only path to success was through education.
“I grew up in Newvale and I have experienced that life in the township is not easy, especially for children. We have decided to take these children under our care, and to prevent them from becoming involved in criminal activities.”
