Spotlight on historical buildings in the Chris Hani district

Over the next few weeks, The Rep will be showcasing some of the historical buildings found in Komani and in the greater Chris Hani district – and we need your input!

Members of the public are invited to send in a photo and a brief summary of the historical significance of a historical building in the area. If valid, the photo will be published on The Rep website www.therep.co.za as part of the series.

This week, we’re kicking off with the Town Hall in Komani. The building, which boasts an impressive stone facade, is situated in the town’s main street, Cathcart Road, in the middle of the Central Business District.

The foundation stone of the town hall was laid on May 24, 1882. The new town hall took the place of the old 1858 building, which had been pulled down. The architect was Sydney Stent and local sandstone was used in the construction.

Pride of place was taken up by the Clock Tower, at 80 foot high, with a four-dial clock. The cost of the building, at the time, had been 12 500 pounds.
