Students have been told to vacate the Fort Hare Alice campus as it is being shut down until further notice.
According to reports, the students are set to leave the campus today.
Eastern Cape police spokesman Captain Siyasanga Nontshinga indicated in a statement that a student had been arrested after a student centre was set alight, causing an estimated R200 000 damage.

Students previously also looted a bookshop on campus.
Students have been protesting about water outages and power cuts.
Protesters had demanded to see the university’s vice chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu on Monday between 3.30pm and 5pm, with the centre set alight shortly afterwards.
More arrests are expected with police on the scene to monitor the situation.
Nontshinga said the suspect had been charged with arson and will appear in the Alice Magistrate’s Court today.
