Fifty four years ago on this day politicians dubbed as “The Rivonia 11” were charged with sabotage and attempting to violently bring down the South African government. This wasafter a raid by the security police at Liliesleaf farm on July 11,1963, where the police arrested prominent leaders of the African National Congress and uMkhonto weSizwe.
Among them were Walter Sisulu, Raymond Mhlaba, Govan Mbeki, Ahmed Kathrada, Rusty Bernstein, Dennis Goldberg, James Kantor, Andrew Mlangeni, Elias Motsoaledi, Bob Hepple and Nelson Mandela
