The Grahamstown High Court handed down life sentences to two of four men who gang raped a 25-year-old woman on December 24 last year.
Siphamandla Dyasi, 18, was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment with life sentences handed to Anele Yawa, 26 and Masixole Pieter Matwa, 24. Aphelele Yawa, 18, was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment.
The gang rape took place after the victim had gone drinking with the accused and while she was walking home from a neighbouring farm.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the investigating officer and said: “This will indeed send a strong message to our communities that it does pay to put trust in the criminal justice system and those contemplating these horrendous deeds to refrain from them unless they want to spend a lifetime behind bars. Well done to the investigating officers and the prosecuting teams.”
