Five Mount Frere men and two women are facing lengthy prison sentences after being convicted of murder and arson.
Police spokesman Captain Edith Mjoko said police had lodged a tireless investigation after the death of a brother and sister, aged 60 and 62, in Mount Frere in September 2014. The man and woman, who were accused of being involved in witchcraft were attacked in their home, killed and set alight.
Five men – Patrick Zingqi, 50, Fezekile Ngonongono, 40, Songeze Dyantyi, 50, Sibongile Gcadinja, 50 and Ndikhokhele Mpahleni and a woman, Zoliswa Gcadinja, 46, were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ntanbankulu Circuit High Court. An elderly woman, Mamlungu Zingqgi, 75, was convicted but sentenced to 20 years in prison due to her advanced age.
Mjoko said thanks to the efforts of investigating officer Detective Sergeant S Msindwana the arrests and convictions followed.
