KEI Road Police members were on patrol yesterday when they received a complaint about a shop that was being robbed in their area.
It is alleged that three men, armed with a pistol and a shotgun, had entered the shop and demanded money. The owner of the shop was hit in the head with a shotgun.
The complainant’s wife was at a house nearby and called the police.
Kei Road Police members quickly responded and met three suspects leaving the shop with items. They managed to arrest one suspect, aged 29, from Ndakana Location in Stutterheim.
Two other suspects ran away. All the stolen items, including the money and a shotgun, were recovered. The suspect has been linked to a hijacking and armed robbery that occurred in the Kei Road area from the beginning of the month. Police investigations are continuing in tracking down the two suspects that fled the scene.
The suspect was charged for possession of unlicensed firearm (shotgun) and possession of stolen property. The suspect will appear in the King William’s Town Magistrate Court soon.
The station commander of Kei Road Captain Ntsikelelo Bangani thanked the members for their quick response that led to the arrest of the suspect.
“This is a major breakthrough as the arrest foiled many robberies that already occurred and were going to occur in our policing areas. This shows dedication from SAPS members as they immediately attended to the complaint and recovered the firearm and goods that were taken,” he added.
