A security guard has been shot dead following a shootout between men who had been involved in a house robbery in Aliwal North and security company guards who had responded to the activation a panic button.
Police spokesman warrant officer Moitheri Bojabotseha said the owner of a cash loans had arrived home early on Thursday morning after drawing money for workers from an ATM.
He was surprised by two men inside his house where his wife and granddaughter were sleeping. He was hit with a crowbar and was unconscious while the men allegedly assaulted his wife and granddaughter. The wife refused to open the safe and the granddaughter managed to activate the panic button.
A local security company,Leinko Security, responded and a shootout ensued between the security guards and the men, who fled in the house owner’s car.
The guard died in Aliwal Hospital and the men fled in the car.
