Police report drownings throughout the Eastern Cape

THE Eastern Cape police have reported 10 drownings in the Eastern Cape over the weekend with the majority of deaths attributed to people trying to cross swollen rivers.

Police spokesman Captain Mali Govender said the bodies of two women, aged 41 and 45 respectively, were recovered in the Nobhokwe river near Cofimvaba.

In Tsomo, a 40-year-old woman drowned in the Tsojana river while a 13-year-old boy drowned in the Mthatha river near Mthata.

A 27-year-old man drowned at sea in Coffee Bay while a 17-year-old man drowned in the Kei River at Kei Mouth.

A 22-year-old man was reported to have drowned at Eastern Beach in East London while two men, aged 19 and 20 respectively, drowned in the Kei River near Kei Bridge.

In Dutywa, a man whose age is not yet known, drowned in the Mbashe river.

Govender warned residents not to try to cross swollen rivers.
