THE Queenstown internal cricket league (QICL) match between Walter Sisulu University cricket club (WSUCC) and Northern Region Warriors cricket club (NRWCC) was halted due to the rain at the Sada Cricket field in Whittlesea on Sunday.

The 50 over match ended in an entertaining draw after WSUCC won the toss and decided to bat first. The home side posted a score of 216 in 50 overs all out while the visiting side, which fielded a team filled with young players, showed no signs of being intimidated as they chased the set score.

WSUCC had lost two wickets after four overs with 22-runs on the scoreboard before rain ended play.

Lavisa Nomkhonwana scored a half century in 91 runs from 76 balls which consisted of eight fours and four sixes. WSUCC took their run rate to 8.6 per over and ended up on 178 for three after the 20th over before the players went on a drinks break.

After the break NRWCC 12-year-old left arm spinner Amahle Dinga claimed four quick wickets for 18 runs. He was well supported by Viwe Yawa with (3/34), Ntsika Smayile (2/40)  in what seemed like a David and Goliath showcase.

Manager and coach of NRWCC Lonwabo Dinge said that it was Dinga’s readiness that was the key to his performance.

“This is the kind of cricketer that we need in our team. Whether Dinga retains his spot as a young all rounder when the senior players are back remains to be seen, but he might have done enough to warrant a regular place in the side.”

The draw meant that NRWCC would be at the top of the log standings after losing only one game in the 2017/18 QICL.
