The Congress of the People (COPE) has called for former President Jacob Zuma to be charged with treason.
In a statement today, Cope national spokesman Dennis Bloem said the party was “more than ever convinced that Jacob Zuma must be charged with treason.”
He said the party had treason and corruption charges against Zuma and the Guptas in March 2016, “but we know now why those cases were thrown into the dust bin – the Police, the Hawks and the NPA were also captured.”
Cope believed that the ANC should take full responsibility for the mess in the country. “President Cyril Ramaphosa was part of the ANC NEC and he was sitting in Cabinet meetings where illegal decisions were taken, and he supported them.”
Cope also listed former ministers including Des van Rooyen, Lynne Brown, Malusi Gigaba, adding that these, and other ministers, should come forward and tell the Zondo Commission the truth.

“We are also aware that it was not only Ministers and Deputies that were getting instructions from Saxonworld, Premiers, MECs, Directors-General and senior civil servants. They also must come forward and clean their consciences.”
Cope also wanted Ramaphosa to appear before the Commission “to answer why he supported Zuma in taking illegal decisions in the Cabinet. We believe that he should also seek credible ways to find out such information on his Ministers and to make it public.”
He said Cope was applauding Mcebisi Jonas, Vytjie Mentoor and Themba Maseko for their bravery and for putting their own safety at stake to save South Africa.
“We want to encourage all South Africans to come forward with state capture information.”
