The Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) will donate relief material worth R457 000 to 49 victims of tornado and hailstorm disasters in various areas in Ngcobo as part of International Disaster Reduction Day.
The equipment will include corrugated iron, rafters and nails which will be handed over at Entibaneni Village at 10am.
CHDM communications manager Thobeka Mqamelo said “This year CHDM will provide relief to the community of Entibaneni, ward 7 in Engcobo Local Municipality. This will be through handing over of 20 lightning conductors to a community of 220 households. This area is prone to lightning strike disasters and the lightning conductors will minimize related occurrences.”
The event will be celebrated under “Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience” as this year’s theme.
Mqamelo said the day was aimed at raising awareness and to share the methods that communities around the world implemented to reduce exposure to disasters.
