Six suspects have been arrested after police foiled an alleged planned cash-in-transit heist in Alice yesterday.
The multi-disciplinary team comprising the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and the Tactical Response Team (TRT) led by Crime Intelligence from the Eastern Cape and Western Cape, acting on a tip-off of a group of men from the Western Cape were planning to rob a CIT vehicle in Alice in the Eastern Cape.
Six suspects were intercepted in Krwakrwa village in Alice while four went on the run, national police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.
Two R4 rifles, four R5 rifles, a revolver, a minibus and a sedan were seized.
A white Toyota double cab bakkie was found abandoned near Fort Beaufort and was confiscated.
The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine possible use in other crimes.
General Khehla Sithole said while inroads were being made in curbing CIT heists, more needed to be done.
“I continue to call on communities to assist us with any information that can help (us) proactively respond to serious and violent crimes.”
