Hockey league set to kick off

The indoor hockey trials have reached the end with the league set to start on Saturday.

The results for the day fixture are as follows:

In the first game, Eagles won 9-2 against Warriors and Popcorn Tigers won by 3-2 against Dominators.

The third game was won 8-1 by the Matrix against Teen Titans and Wolfpack beat Gladiators by 7-1 in the last game.

One of the league organisers, Treveen Saupersad, said development plans included getting more teams from around Komani involved without focusing on Victoria Park, Aloevale and New Rest.

“We would like to involve more students from our other schools, namely Queens College, both junior and senior, Girls High, Balmoral and Hangklip, as well as any other hockey loving person of the town,” said Saupersad.

He said their desire was to change people’s perceptions of the Indoor Sports Centre as many people had lost hope in the sports facility. He said they were now boosting its the image through the hockey league.

“We hope to develop it further by inviting teams from our other surrounding areas like Port Elizabeth, East London, King Williams Town, Grahamstown. This will give the local players better exposure to the sport and hopefully give them the opportunity to further their talents at a provincial level or even national.”

Last year we were a total of two girls’ teams and five guy teams. This year we’ve combined our teams and made them Co-ed teams which totaled eight teams.
