Two men from Lesseyton each received life sentences at the Grahamstown High Court on April 5 for kidnapping a couple near Komani last year.
A source had informed The Rep that the young couple, who were parked in an open field on the N6 during October last year, were approached by two assailants who had apparently demanded money and other items. The two men then abducted the young couple and repeatedly raped the young woman.
Police spokesperson Captain Namhla Mdleleni confirmed the conviction of the perpetrators, indicating that Sinethemba Ntombayiteti, 24, will undergo a life sentence and 50 years imprisonment and Asiphe Tshali, 24, will face a life sentence and 45 years imprisonment.
Mdleleni said the convicts drove to an ‘undisclosed’ location and tied the male victim up, leaving him inside the vehicle. “They took out his girlfriend and raped her. After the rape they left, using the victim’s vehicle. Cases of kidnapping, robbery and rape were opened and the docket was assigned to warrant officer Ziphathe Songca who managed to arrest two suspects within a short time.” Mdleleni added that the suspects were detained and denied bail until the guilty verdict.
She indicated that acting cluster commander, Brigadier Pumla Mavuka welcomed the sentencing of the accused and commended Detective Warrant Officer Songca for his dedication.
