Human trafficking trial continues

Date:

The trial of four Whittlesea women charged with human trafficking and a foreign national facing a rape charge, is set to continue in the Komani Regional Court tomorrow.

The four – Xolelwa Garhishe, Yolanda Klaas, Zintle Tom and Nwabisa Kaziwa – are accused of trafficking a 12-year-old girl in Whittlesea in 2016. Co-accused, Harun Mohammed, a Bangladeshi national, allegedly raped the girl. They have all pleaded not guilty.

The girl was allegedly sold to different men for various amounts including R50 and R80. The court heard that some of the men escaped arrest.

On Wednesday, Magistrate Nomsami Mshunqane ruled against the admission of Garhishe’s statement into evidence after the court accepted her evidence that her rights had been violated when the police took her statement at the time of her arrest.

This followed a trial-within-a-trial earlier in the week.

The case resumes tomorrow morning.
