Multimillion-rand investment to bring jobs

Date:

Economic development, environmental affairs and tourism (DEDEAT) MEC Mlungisi Mvoko announced a multimillion-rand investment into environmental management projects in the province today.

The announcement was made at the commemoration of Provincial Environment Day in  Nelson Mandela Bay.

DEDEAT spokesperson Mvusi Sicwetsha said funding for the project, which is expected to create hundreds of jobs, will be directed towards waste management and alien invasive plant eradication projects in the districts of the province.

Sicwetsha said: “This investment seeks to champion the concept of sustainable development by creating jobs, reducing poverty and promoting the environment at the same time. This investment gives effect to the National Development Plan which highlights the centrality of environmental sustainability for robust socio-economic development.”

He added: “This programme also dovetails with the “Good Green Deeds” campaign launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in East London in March. The campaign aims to change people’s attitudes and behaviour towards waste and its management, as well as to begin taking charge and responsibility of keeping the environment clean and healthy.”
