Police have arrested a 27 year-old man believed to be a caretaker at a school in Whittlesea for allegedly raping a 7 year-old pupil.
According to police spokesperson Captain Namhla Mdleleni, members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit confirmed the man’s arrest and said the victim had allegedly been raped since 2018. “It is alleged that the victim was afraid to go to school. Police were summoned and immediately attended to the complaint.” Mdleleni said the suspect, who is facing charges of rape, was arrested and appeared in the Whittlesea magistrate’s court on Thursday to apply for bail.
Christ The King Primary School board member Sicelo Ngqoyiya confirmed that the suspect was an employee at the school, indicating that he had started work at the institution this year. Ngqoyiya said a meeting was called on Monday to update parents on the matter. “This matter is with the police and we are not permitted to talk at present. We have been consulting with them, have met the investigating officer and have given access to the premises. We have organised social workers to offer counselling to the children and we are working with the education department for support,” said Ngqoyiya.
The mother of the victim could not be reached by the time of going to print.
